What Are The Properties of Aluminum 5 Series

Aluminum 5 series is the aluminum plate series with the best comprehensive performance among the current 1-8 series. It also has the most aluminum alloy grades. Its main alloying elements are aluminum and magnesium, of which the magnesium content is between 3% and 6%.

The difference in magnesium content determines the performance differences between different grades of 5 series aluminum plates. The typical ones are 5052 alloy, 5754 aluminum plate, 5083 aluminum plate, 5182 aluminum plate, etc. All of them features good corrosion resistance.

Strength

Strength is one of the issues that must be considered when choosing the aluminum plates. The strength decreases successively according to 7 series, 2, series 4, series 6, series 5, series 3, and series 1.

Corrosion resistance

The corrosion resistance of aluminum plates will directly affect their service life. Especially for products that work under extreme conditions of high corrosion, you should pay more attention to the corrosion resistance of aluminum plates. The corrosion resistance of alloy aluminum plates includes chemical corrosion and intergranular corrosion resistance.

Generally speaking, 1 series pure aluminum has good corrosion resistance, 5 series also performs well, followed by 3 series and 6 series.

Formability

Since the formability is related to the temper, after selecting the alloy grades, the strength range of various tempers must also be considered. Those with low strength are easy to form, while those with high strength have poor formability.

1000 series, 3000 series and 5000 series have good formability, 2 series and 6 series’ formability is very common, 7000 series can basically not be formed and processed.

Electric welding properties

The welding performance of 5000 series is very good. When full penetration weld transverse tensile strength is required to meet the base metal requirements (usually for welding procedure qualification), ER5356 filler metal can usually only meet the minimum welding strength requirements of 5005, 5050, 5052 and 5086 aluminum plate. For 5083 and 5456, it may not meet its minimum weld strength requirements.
