Why Is Aluminum Coil Chosen for Gutter

In modern building drainage systems, gutters are key components, and their material selection directly affects the durability and safety of buildings. Aluminum coils are gradually becoming the mainstream choice in the gutter field with their excellent comprehensive performance.

Alloy selection

Gutters are exposed to outdoor environments for a long time, and both corrosion resistance and structural strength must be taken into account. 3003H24 aluminum-manganese colored coil stock is a popular choice.

By adding 1%-1.5% manganese elements, the alloy forms a dense oxide protective film, which can remain stable in corrosive environments such as acid rain and salt spray. Its tensile strength can reach more than 120MPa, and its compressive resistance is better than that of ordinary steel.

It can withstand external impacts such as snow accumulation and ladder leaning, and is not easy to dent or deform. In addition, the specific gravity of aluminum-manganese alloy is only 1/3 of that of steel, which greatly reduces the self-weight of the gutter, reduces the overall load of the building, and facilitates transportation and installation.

Coating technology

The coating process on the surface of color coated aluminum coils is the key guarantee for its weather resistance. The current mainstream mastic aluminum trim coil includes the following two types:

Polyester coating (PE)

As a cost-effective choice, polyester coating forms a protective layer of more than 20μm through electrostatic spraying or roller coating, which can effectively resist ultraviolet rays, high and low temperature cycles and acid and alkali corrosion.

This coating is particularly suitable for temperate and subtropical climates. Typical applications include gutters in villas and commercial buildings, with a service life of more than 15 years.

Fluorocarbon coating (PVDF)

For extreme environments, fluorocarbon coatings show super weather resistance due to the C-F bond in the molecular structure (bond energy of 485kJ/mol). In coastal salt spray environments, the performance retention rate of fluorocarbon coated aluminum plates exceeds 95%, and there is no change after being immersed in strong acids and alkalis of PH1-PH14 for 1 year.

The natural oxide film and resin coating on the surface of the aluminum coil form a double protection, which fundamentally eliminates the risk of rust. Aluminum coil gutters can be "maintenance-free", and the long-term use cost is reduced by more than 60%.

Lightweight and easy installation

The density of aluminum coil is only 2.7g/cm³, and its weight is less than 1/3 of that of steel at the same volume. This means that gutter installation does not require large lifting equipment, and one person can complete cutting, bending and other operations, which increases construction efficiency by 40%.

Environmental protection and recyclability

Aluminum coils can be 100% recycled and reused, and the energy consumption of recycling is only 5% of that of primary aluminum production, which meets the green building standards.

Aesthetics and design flexibility

Resin coatings can achieve a variety of surface effects such as matte, high gloss, and copper imitation, easily matching architectural styles. At the same time, the aluminum coil has strong plasticity and can be formed into various cross-sections such as K-type and U-type through roller pressing to adapt to different roof slopes and drainage requirements.
