Industrial aluminum foil is the aluminum product with the most processes, the most difficult processing technology and the thinnest thickness in aluminum processing and production. It is usually machined from industrial pure aluminum. Aluminum foil production process involves all rolling and heat treatment processes from casting, hot rolling, cold rolling to foil rolling.

At present, there are two common processing routes in the industry: (1) ingot hot rolling method; (2) twin-roll casting and rolling method. During ingot hot rolling method, the aluminium melt is cast into ingots, and after homogenization, hot rolling, cold rolling, intermediate annealing and other processes, the cold rolling is continued to form a sheet with a thickness of about 0.4~1.0 mm as a foil blank (melting and casting → hot rolling and billeting → cold rolling → foil rolling).

Compared with the ingot hot rolling method, the process flow of the aluminum foil blank production by the casting and rolling method is relatively simple; it does not need to go through complicated process steps such as smelting ingot, milling, homogenization and hot rolling, but pours the aluminum melt directly into two rotating casting rolls (molds), and the two processes of solidification and hot rolling are simultaneously completed in the casting and rolling zone within 2 to 3 seconds to obtain a plate with a thickness of 4 to 7 mm.

The twin-roll casting and rolling method has simple equipment, less total investment, and short production cycle, which saves many tedious processes such as milling, homogenization, thus saving production cost, but its quality control is difficult, therefore it is relatively rarely used in high-quality aluminum foil products.
